Why annual mileage matters
Annual mileage is a common figure to need on hand and an awkward one to actually calculate — car insurance quotes, lease mileage limits, and resale value estimates all ask for it, but most people only know how far they drive in a week or a month, not a year. This calculator does that scaling for you: enter the distance and period you actually know, in whichever distance unit is easiest, and it converts to an annual figure automatically.
How the calculation works
The distance is first converted to miles, then scaled by the ratio between a year and whatever period you entered. A year is treated as 365.25 days — the average across a 4-year leap-year cycle — rather than a flat 365, and a month as 365.25 ÷ 12 (about 30.44 days) rather than an assumed 30, since real months range from 28 to 31 days and a flat assumption would introduce a small but unnecessary bias into the annual figure.
Worked examples
Driving 100 miles a week works out to about 5,218 miles a year. Driving 1,000 miles a month comes out to a clean 12,000 miles a year — a common baseline for "average" mileage cited by insurers and lease agreements. Someone driving exactly 30 miles every day of the year lands at roughly 10,958 miles annually.
