Converts to lowercase, transliterates accented letters (é → e, ñ → n, ß → ss, and more), and replaces everything else with your chosen separator — collapsing repeats and trimming the ends, so you never get a slug like "-hello--world-".

What is a URL slug?

A slug is the part of a URL that identifies a specific page in readable words, like the 10-best-pizza-recipes in example.com/blog/10-best-pizza-recipes. A good slug is short, lowercase, uses hyphens instead of spaces, and skips punctuation and special characters that don't belong in a URL.

How it works

The converter lowercases your text, swaps accented letters for their plain equivalents (é becomes e, ñ becomes n, ß becomes ss), and replaces everything that isn't a letter or number with your chosen separator. Runs of separators collapse into one, and any separator at the very start or end gets trimmed — so "10 Best Café Recipes!" becomes 10-best-cafe-recipes, not -10-best-cafe-recipes-.

Why hyphens instead of underscores?

Hyphens are commonly recommended for readable URLs because they clearly separate words. A slug such as best-pizza-recipes is easy for people and search engines to interpret. Underscores can also work, but they are less commonly used as word separators in URLs. This tool lets you choose either separator when your site or content system has a specific preference.

Frequently asked questions

Does this handle accented characters and non-Latin languages?

Yes, for common Latin-based accented characters — including French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and similar languages. "Café" becomes "cafe" and "Straße" becomes "strasse," for example. Non-Latin scripts such as Cyrillic, Arabic, Greek, Chinese, and Japanese aren't transliterated and are removed.

Can I generate multiple slugs at once?

Yes. Switch to Bulk mode and enter one title per line. The generator creates one slug for each non-empty line, keeping the results in the same order.

If you working with a list of titles? You can also remove duplicate lines before generating your slugs.

Will numbers stay in the slug?

Yes — numbers are treated the same as letters and are kept as-is. "Top 10 Movies of 2024" becomes top-10-movies-of-2024.

Is a slug the same as a permalink?

Related but not identical. The slug is just the readable identifier part (like 10-best-pizza-recipes); the permalink is the full, permanent URL that includes it (like example.com/blog/10-best-pizza-recipes).
