What is T9 texting?

T9 ("Text on 9 keys") was the predictive text input system used on feature phones before smartphones had full touchscreen keyboards. Instead of a phone's numeric keypad, users pressed each key once per letter — the same key represents 3 or 4 different letters, so the phone's software used a built-in dictionary to guess which real word the sequence of key presses most likely meant. This made texting considerably faster than the older "multi-tap" method, where a key had to be pressed repeatedly (once for each letter it represented) to cycle to the letter you wanted.

This mapping is defined by the international ITU E.161 standard, so it's identical on every phone worldwide — the keys 1 and 0 don't carry any letters. Keys 7 and 9 get four letters each (rather than three) specifically to fit all 26 letters of the alphabet across the eight number keys.
