How winning percentage is calculated
Games played is simply the sum of wins, losses, and ties:
Games Played = Wins + Losses + Ties Winning percentage counts a tie as half a win:
Winning Percentage = (Wins + 0.5 × Ties) ÷ Games Played × 100 If there are no ties, the tie term drops out and the formula simplifies to the more familiar:
Winning Percentage = Wins ÷ (Wins + Losses) × 100 For example, a team with 27 wins, 17 losses, and 6 ties has played 50 games. Their winning percentage is (27 + 0.5 × 6) ÷ 50 × 100 = 60%.
A tie counted as half a win is a common convention, but it isn't universal — some sports and leagues use their own standings or points systems instead (for example, awarding points for a win, fewer points for a tie, and none for a loss, then ranking by total points rather than a single percentage). Check your specific league's rules if precision matters.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to enter ties?
No — ties are optional. Leave the field blank (or enter 0) if your sport or league doesn't have them, and the calculator treats ties as 0, which gives the simpler Wins ÷ (Wins + Losses) × 100 result.
Why does a tie count as half a win?
It's a widely used convention for turning a three-outcome record (win/loss/tie) into a single percentage, treating a tie as splitting the difference between a win and a loss. It's common, but not the only system in use — some leagues use points-based standings instead of a single winning percentage.
Does this work for any sport?
The math here is a common, general-purpose convention, not an official rule tied to one specific league or sport. Most sports without ties will match exactly; sports and leagues that do have ties may use a different standings system, so check your league's specific rules if you need an official number.
