Date of birth, how old to be today

This is the most common reason to work backward from an age: figuring out what date of birth someone would need for a specific age requirement today — turning 21, for example. Enter 21 years, 0 months, 0 days on the Age to Birthday tab, and the calculator finds the exact date of birth that makes today someone's 21st birthday. The same works for any age and any level of precision — add months and days for a more specific target, or leave them at zero for a clean, round age.

How old is someone born in 2003?

This is a different, simpler question — and it only has a rough answer, not an exact one. Knowing just a birth year, without a specific month and day, means the best you can do is subtract: this year minus 2003. That gives someone's age for most of the year, but it's off by one for people whose birthday hasn't happened yet this year — without knowing the actual birth date, there's no way to tell which side of that line someone falls on. The "Age from Birth Year" tab does exactly this simple subtraction, and says so plainly rather than presenting a rough number as if it were exact.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator ask for years, months, and days separately?

Because that's how age is naturally expressed and how it needs to be specified to pin down an exact date of birth. "21 years old" alone still spans an entire year of possible birth dates; adding months and days narrows that down to one specific day.

Why is the birth-year result only approximate?

Because a year alone doesn't say whether someone's birthday has already happened this year. Someone born in January of a given year has already had this year's birthday by summer; someone born in December likely hasn't. Both show the same simple year-minus-year result here, even though their true ages could differ by one.
