Australia's two kinds of territory
Australia is the one case here where "territory" isn't a single category. The 3 internal territories — the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory, and the Jervis Bay Territory — sit on the Australian mainland and are administered domestically. The 7 external territories — Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Norfolk Island, the Ashmore and Cartier Islands, the Coral Sea Islands, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, and the Australian Antarctic Territory — are scattered island and Antarctic possessions, most of them with no permanent population at all. Because these are genuinely different categories, they get their own separate "include" checkboxes rather than being lumped into one list.
One easy mix-up worth flagging directly: some official sources group the Jervis Bay Territory administratively alongside the external territories in departmental listings, but geographically and constitutionally it's internal — it's a small parcel of land on the Australian mainland, not an offshore possession. This generator follows the standard states-and-territories classification, listing it as internal.

Are territories included by default?
No — only states or provinces are included until you check "Include Territories" (or, for Australia, either territory group specifically). Once checked, every territory in that group is included by default, and you can uncheck any individual one you don't want.
